- Title:
- Reading Biracialism and Identity in "A Lesson Before Dying"
- When:
-
03.13.2010 02:00 PM
- Where:
-
Barnes and Noble – Tanglewood -
Roanoke
Description
Cheryl Hopson, Roanoke College visiting professor, will focus on Gaines's dramatization of biracialism through minor characters, Matthew Antoine and the bricklayers. The vitriolic hatred these men feel for themselves as individuals of both black and white ancestry manifests in their outward demonstrations of hatred for and denigration of the one community in which they are tolerated, i.e., the black community of Bayonne, LA. Their whiteness provides them access to better jobs, while their blackness prevents their benefiting from the privileges and full citizenship afforded whites.
